An introduction to “Sri Adwaita Vedanta Pratyabhijna” by Amarnath Sharma
Vedanta is a vast and difficult subject. The Quantum Meechanics in Physics with its latest theories is perhaps lending support to the enigmatic Vedanta. In seems , in order to mitigate the fear and complexity in understnding Vedanta, Sri Anumarlapuudi Amaranath Sharma, an NRI of Australia, has written and published this book caalled “Sri Awaita Vedanta Pratyabhijna”. Pratyabijna means rewinding ( or recaptulating) what is taught.--- that great Philosophy told by Maharishis in Upanishads -- particularly by maharishi Yajnavlkyya in “Chandogya Upanishad”. Written in Telugu, the technical words of Vedanta used will gradually become familiar to the reader.

Adwaita Philosophy is the pinnacle of human intelligence and wisdom, as Sri Amarnath says. The latest scientific research is adding strength to it. Einstein’s theory of Relativity, Gravity, Cosmology, natural patterns in Fibonnaci numbers etc., show how deeply the Vedic Rishis understood about the Univere and its ways. The greatness of their understanding lies in the fact that, not only the Universe’s laws and means but also they had the experiential knowledge about thhe Maker and Sustainer of this Universee. Their kindness lies in the fact that they distributed their knowlwdge for the benefit of mankind in the form of Hymns in Upanishads. This continued upto Sri Adi Shankarachaya and his followers and spiritual Gurus.

In the light of the above, Sri Amarnath has toiled to explain the key concepts of Brahman, Prakriti and Maya. Alongwith that, he explains in simple words, what is binding the individual Self and how to overcome and become Free, i.e., attain Moksh. Within a few days of publishing this bok, it attained great accolades of scholors and Pundits of Vedanta. Some of their valuable comments are appended. My own review of the Manuscript given in Telugu some time back is also given below.

Incidentally, Sri Amarnath is a childhood friend of mine. We participated in the All India Radio’s weekly children’s programmes. We were college mates too in the Osmania University Science College – he in Geology and myself in Astronomy. Sri Amarnath worked as a Geophysicist, then as a Nuclear Physicist and much later as an Investment Banker and Insurance Advisor.

I sincerely congratulate Sri Amarnath in bringing out this beautiful and concize book ‘Pratyabhijna’. ----Surampudi Venkateswara Rao, Hyderabad, 27/04/2023.

Some comments of the Pundits are given hereunder.:

    1. Sri Salaka Raghunatha Sarma garu called on receipt of copy of book. He has received sanmanam from Sri Bharati teertha swami.
    2. “Sri Amaranth has very meticulously explained the various methods of self-discipline that leads to the realisation of the Ultimate Truth and how it is centered above all in theory and practice of spiritual concepts.
    4. Sri MVNP Sastry, Vijayawada I got very good book from you by the grace of viswanatha to understand easily adwaitha, which is very toughest subject. Thank you sir.
    6. Sri Uma sahasramu is a grand sanskrit literary work combining the thought processes of Sr i Adi shankaracharya and Sri Mahakavi Kalidasa, written by none other than kavya kantha Ganapati muni. This is now translated into telugu by a great Scholar Sri Rangavajjula Muralidhara Rao garu. He adopted a different Artha Nareeswara mukha chitram, but after seeing Sri Amarnath’s book chnged to the same Title picture of “Pratyabhijna” to his own book, seeking permission of Sri Amarnath.
7. Sri Amarnath had listned to the lectures of Sri Yallamraju Srinivasa Rao, a great Pundit of Vedanta -- who had giiven discourses running into hundreds of hours on Youtube. It had a great efffeect on his understanding of Vedanta. Now Sri Amarnath sent hisbook to Sri Srinivas Rao and he has given a very valuable comment on the book. His comment -- given below --is a prize possession of Sri Amarnath : -- "శ్రీ అద్వైత విజ్ఞాన ప్రత్యబిజ్ఞ (శ్రీ అనుమర్లపూడి అమరనాథ్ శర్మ ) అద్వైత ప్రత్యబిజ్ఞను సరళముగా లఘువుగా ఈ పుస్తకము ద్వారా వివరించడం చాలా బాగుంది.

LIFE IN HOSPITAL ICU AND THEREAFTEER

Life iN HOSPIITALS AND ICUS and thereafter I have been forgetful and occasionally remembering things that happened. Hence this blogpost:
Of late patients are counting days depending on some blood counts. Thee are like count of platelets, minerals etc. Mine was the case of drop in Sodium and Potassium to dangerous levels. However it does not happen in one go. It seems like I had a viral fever towards end of October. I lost appetite and my food intake was very low. I was falling. When I fell unconscious, word went to my daughter Sarika and son-in-law Pramod. Through some known contact Pramod arranged for admission to Apollo hospitals, Kakinada and came from Hyderabad to Kakinada by road. I was brought in Ambulance by Sridhaar of Rcpuram and Pramod completed formalities of admission. Shashank came from London within 2 days. Lakshmi shifted to Hyderabad from Rcur with imp. Belongings. I was in icu for nearly 15 days and then brought to Hyderabad to my daughter’s home. Pramod appointed a helper boy, by name Ganesh, to help me with my Diapers and some exercises for walking etc. While bringing me to Hyderabad from Apollo hospital, Kakinada , Shashank accompanied me in the Ambulance. The Ambulance had a minor accident on the way with its tyre burst. After reaching Hyderabd also on the 2nd day , my tricycle for excersize hit a rock, and I fell down. A local doctor gave me pain killer injection. Both these incidents gave me nightmares and hallucinations for a few days. Well, I am in the process of settling in Hyderabad (after some 40 years) Now, let me describe how time was spent in the hospital. Seeing my post yesterday my learned friend Sri LHRao commented “it was Dada Vasvani who said son –in –law should be known as a son –in- love and daughter –in-law as a daughter-in-love.”.How True. It is!. It is The desire and decision of the 4 pillars of My Family, viz, son, son in love , daughter and daughter in love that I started living in Hyderabad again. My helper Ganesh left in between on some pretext too LIFE IN ICU Icu means ‘I don’t see you’ in common parlance. I see only doctors and nurses. They were all helpful. Somehow some body made a video call from there and I was seen by Surampudi and RCpur families too. Each ICU accommodates bout 9 beds/ patients. Piercing my body with needles starts about 4.30 in the morning. Taking blood sample, glucose injection, saline, X-ray, CT scan,, MRI scan , etc follow dependingon doctor/s recommendation. Someone would cleanse my body; someone puts on their uniform gown. I realized this body is not really mine. Anybody would experiment or exercise their formula or program. Coffee by 6 to 6.30. And breakfast by 7.30 to 8 .brushing etc by Mouthwash liquid;. With a small tub placed in front of me. Once I asked sister to arrange for the small tub. She said “Sir, the time is 1 AM. Nobody does this now. I will wake you up about 5 AM. Then you can do.” A barber used to visit by 5 AM and shave patients as per need. Doctor’s visit could be anytime going round patients and enquiring about their condition. The visit could be twice sometimes. Sashank used to wait for him and enquire about me. The icu life was rather comfortable and I got used to it. But then my condition improved and I got discharge after about 2 weeks. I have become forgetful now-a-days. I forgot to mention some important events. I remember that on Kartik Purnima day I was in the hospital. That night I had a dream in which I left my body and went to Golok and some other worlds. Maharishi Vishwamitra had become a friend of mine. He was the most intelligent human being and gave Gayatri Mantra to the world. He told me that we both are discovering the same Truth. I told Shashank about this. Another horrible dream I had was some ominous wooden piece dangling from my neck. I could finally throw it in the fire of Havan in Saibaba temple in Rcpur. With Shashank’s help and convincing Dr. Manohar, I shifted to a separate room at a premium. This room has attached bathroom TV and an additional bed for the attending person, that was Shashank. ICU services continued in this room also. Before shifting I used to tell Shshank to get some sweets for the hospital staff ., from a Marwadi sweets’ shop. Actually that shop is in Chikkdpalli, Hyderabad and for a while I forgot that I was in Kakinada hospital. Shashank must be laughing inwards. Visitors are allowed. So, one day Sridhar, Hanumanth Rao and his daughter Dr. Gayatri visited me. Another day Lakshmi’s sister Sujata, her hubby Pradeep and my br-in-law Srinivas visited from Visakhapatnam. Shashank wondered at the deep knowledge of Pradeep on various matters, including my condition. Perhaps, he too experienced the same ailment !! I shifted to Hyderabad by Ambulance, accompanied by Shashank. I was taken to my in-laws’ Vedurumudi House in AS Rao nagar, Hyderabad. I am staying there with my daughter Sarika nd son-in-law Pramod before shifting to a rented portion in an opposite house in future. Shashankk stayed for three more weeks and did yeoman service, while working for office online as per London timings. He was also guiding my helper Ganesh on various matters in serving me. Ganesh left after a month’s stay on some pretext. Shashank always gives excellent encouragement to regain active life. After Shashank left, my wife Lakshmi became my care taker. Although emotionally attached her capacity to do things has come down very much. Several factors contributed to this. She had cataract operation at Shekar eye hospital, Bengaluru, that failed and lost her eye-sight in right eye. We tried several other therapies including “Access Bars “ therapy by one lady by name Bhagyasri. After that Lakshmi started feeling that she retired from her activities and also feeling offended and bad about any little adverse comment or deed. However she does not express openly except confiding in me. she had to undeergo histrctomy operaation (laparoscopy) in July 2022 which was not expected due to her old age at 71. Whenever she is not able to attend to my needs I say “Life is easy as a patient , rather than living with a patient “ Home service is full of love and affection, and hospital service is dutiful .Therefore, struggling for better recuperation. Dreams have been a regular feature now. Some time good ones like Mataji Krishna priya blessing, my Veena guruji playing Veena etc. Else bad ones. Funny and peculiar dreams have been frequent – like food items, forgotten incidents, old songs etc., often waking up in the middle. I feel these things are making me gullible and more vulnerable. Sarika and Pramod are taking care of my stay and food etc. They have paid to the agency for providing helper and personal care services @Rs 22000 per month. Sarika went to Ramachandrapuram and arranged for shifting house hold articles At present my schedule includes sun bath and massage therapy with medical creams and oils after breakfast and fresh air sitting at tea time. Permanent servants at home help in this. Otherwise I need to gain strength much more to stand and walk for myself. Svrao; Hyderabad; 3.3..2023

from my Life Journey -- (72 km in 72 years) I was bornin Attili village in 1947; brought up in Hyderabad and now settled in Ramachandrapuram since 2019, 72 km from Attili.

Don't travel today ! it is Kanuma !!

Blog post of SVRao

“Don't Travel today! It is Kanuma..”

Today the 16th January being Kanuma, the 3rd day of Sankranti festival, there is a silence of lethargy all around. I being no exception got up very late in the morning and sipping hot coffee started brooding over nothings. There have been a plethora of activities around for the last few days. People were makinga hell of noise, some doing a bonfire of remains of old furniture, some pouring “Badarika” berry fruits, coins and blessings over children amidst traditional songs, celebrating feasts with relatives and friends etc. But today there is no activity around but happens to remind me of something unforgettable. And I start to reminisce:
It was some 35 years ago, may be in 1983, it happened. I had been to my in-laws' house at Visakhapatnam, having gone for 3 days of holidays (the weekend combined with the festival) for Sankranti, with my wife and child at the invite of my Father-in-law. It is customery to invite the daughter and son-in-law for a family get together for this important fesival and almost all the sons-in-law go to their respective fathers-in-law (and hopefully the latter doesn't go to his father-in-law) not minding the arduous travel in the big rush of trains and buses. The big cities feel sudden depletion of population with comfortable traffic on the roads as though there is an undeclared curfew.
Having taken sufficient rest, feast, fun and frolic I declare that I need to go back to my work-place on this day. There is a rampant belief that nobody should travel on a Kanuma day not withstanding the availability of seats and berths in plenty in the public transport. “Not even a crow would fly to the neighbour on Kanuma day” is a popular proverb in Telugu. Sankranti is a festival of harvesting and the farmers adorn and adore their cattle on Kanuma day as a thanks giving to the animals helping in the farm.
All my poeple try to pursuade me to stay back but being a young dynamic bank officer always rising to the occasion of work and call of duty that I am (suposed to be) I do not relent. So my wife decides to stay back with parents for a week and reluctantly packs my baggage. There were new cloths gifted by my father-in-law to both of us and of course to the child sweet and dear to them and some more items purchased by her in the nearby streets. I further added my two gold rings studded with precious stones that I always was fond of wearing, to be kept in the suitcase with some excuse. The train takes about 3 hours to my place of work and I decide to go by a long distance express train which starts about 6 o'clock in the morning.
I start off early in the morning from my in-laws' house, reach the station well in time and find almost empty train waiting. I comfortably get seated near the window and observe the beauty of the steel city under a thick curtain of fog-and -mist as the train goes past the lines. The Sun also was lethargic and reluctant to rise like the city of Vizag. I start observing the surrounding nature with my drooping eyes and the swing and rhythm of the train and slowly drop into a nap. I woke up with the shouts of Tea vendors on platform of a station and realize that I must have slept for about 2 hours. That means I should get down at the next station coming after an hour. 'OK', I say to myself and check my seat and baggage that I kept under the chair. And Lo! Where is my baggage? My suitcase is gone. I looked around and searched every seat in the train compartment, up and down all the berths. O My God! How come my suitcase is gone? It was there all through my thick and thin and never left me so far in all my travels and travails. Hmm. What to do? Just then I saw the conductor and ticket examiner near the entrance, approach him and narrate. He declred that my bag must have been stolen by a thief who could be travelling in the Coach observing who is sleeping and who is careless. He said he saw the Railway police at Tuni station nabbing a few such thieves with their booty. By this time the train already started and moving at speed. He coolly suggested that I should make a complaint with the Railway police at Samalkot where I will be alighting. I stared and lamented for my negligent sleep and not caring for my in-laws' advice not to travel that day or at least in the early morning. There being no crowd and myself sleeping I must have been an easy prey to the ruthless thief. Cursing my self to the core I got down at Samalkot station and registered my complaint with the Railway Police authorities.
Raching home I realized that my house keys- kept in the suitcase- were also lost. I beg the landlord to break open the lock and close the door with a fresh lock and key before leaving for office. Luckily my office keys were at home and I didn't lose. Else I couldn't imagine what could happen to the career of this dynamic young officer in the bank! At the office too I had to tell my story to almost every employee (and some customers too) much against my wish (and reputation). Almost everyone equvi-vocally said I should not have travelled on Kanuma day; rather take off and enjoy the holiday at my in-laws'.
Later I telephoned to my Regional office at Vizag, sought the help of a few friends to put a word to the Railway Police authorities at Waltair (Vizag) junction.
Days went off heavily.
My Regional office friends' influence must have worked.
After 3 days a police officer visited me in my office cabin and took the details of the things lost in the train (including the suit-case). After another 3 days I got a call from the Waltair railway police station to come and present my self before them. So I catch the afternoon train and reach their station on the signal end of the platform, in the evening. Luckily the officer concerned with my case was present and he again cross checked the details of my items lost. Offering me tea, he then with a cool gaze in his eyes said “Look Sir, since you are working as an important officer of the bank where we have accounts, we try to help you. The items lost by you are lost for ever. They must have been disposed off long back by the thief. However, since you have friends in us we bought a few items and a suitcase for you using some common pool of money which we keep for such cases.. You can declare them as your lost articles and own them under due process.” I said to myself “What is this I am hearing? Why should they buy for me and with what kind of money?”.
I told the officer “Sir, thank you so much for your generosity. But it is much against my conscience that I accept your goods. You may better give them off to some other poor and needy person”. He again told me with the same gaze “Mister, you are not realizing the difficulty. We will be calling you every alternate day to come to any Railway station of our choice and present yourself to identify your goods. Each time we may call you to different stations like Rajahmundry, Vijayawada, Kazipet or even Secunderabad. Can you afford to come leaving your office every alternate day? And anyway we cannot present your lost articles”.
”Oh My God! What a difficult proposition! Slowly I muttered “But Sir, why all this trouble?” The officer said sternly “Otherwise how do you expect us to close the case? Your friends told my senior bosses too to help you? What else you expect?”. I realized the predicament I put everybody in! After sipping the tea I said “Ok Sir, as you please. But kindly call me to a nearby station and close the case early.” The officer smiled at last and said “That's a good decision. Now please check these articles and confirm. The same will be given to you within 2 weeks.” He shoved a sutcase on the table. I find that they kept the articles with a list inside a cheap-looking suitcase like a godown keeper keeps goods with a bin-card. I find the articles as listed by me in my complaint but all at about 20% of the cost of articles that I lost originally. The gold rings too were so light and cheap that only the micro-weights of a sensitive balane in a chemistry lab can properly weigh them; else they could be blown off with the breeze of our breat !
Much against my will I nodded and took leave of the police officer after profusely thanking him.
Rest of the story is for anybody's imagination. After about 10 days I happened to attend a Railway court (of weekly sessions) at Tuni station at about 11 O'clock and declare before the Magistrate that the suitcase and the articles produced by the police are mine. There was a farce of the police catching the thief with the booty and the thief in turn identified me as his victim on the fateful day, all in front of the magistrate, before my declaration. Everybody played their role in this episode perfectly, including me. I started walking off with my newly earned suitcase and articles gifted by the police replacing the role of my beloved in-laws, after signing the relevant papers in the court.
However the drama did not end without a flash-finish!
As I was walking to catch my return train to Samalkot, I heard a voice clling me “Sir, sir..” I looked back and found that it was the thief identified for the episode that day running towards me. I missed a heart beat and stood there helplessly. That thief approached me and said “What about my kick-backs?” I was stunned and inquired “What do you mean?” He explained “Sir, because I agreed to your version and the version of police, you got back your articles. I have to suffer at the hands of the police now. Please give me something for this favour”. It was the shock of my life. A thief asking for a return gift for the theft! What to do? I cursed my fate, gave him a 100 rupee note with a forced smile of a millimeter on my lips and finally proceeded to catch my train on the other Platform.
Well friends, That is the story of a cursed travel on a Kanuma festival day.
So now, will you travel on a Kanuma day –that too against the wish of your beloved wife ?
I know it is only a superstition or a method of pursuation to take rest and not to travel. My incident of losing baggage is only a confidence. But still the people who came to know my story keep quoting it to tell others about perils of Kanuma !!"  I leave it to you now.. Bye!

{Disclaimer: all the characters and incidents in this are ficticious!}

An Indian Bagpiper and his decorated Bull

Photo from my balcony

Image result for sankranti images

Back in Bangalore since a few weeks- this time after spending some 18 weeks in London with son's family. And staying here at my daughter's place for health check-ups and medical procedures.
My mobility has taken a back seat of late, due to Arthritis and nuropathic problems. Back seat because I require a driving prop for walking – whenever I need to walk for more than a minute, restricting to distances within the house Flat. And an accompanying elbow-crutch (commonly called a stick) keeping company in all places. The international flights were a bit easy since wheel-chair service takes you to destinations!
Why I am narrating all this boring stuff? Only to show-case that my window to the outer world has narrowed down to the view from the balcony adjacent to my bedroom, barring the exposure on the TV to the virtual 2 dimension world. And yes, it is the balcony which holds a small window to the outer world of space-time dimensions on the back side of our Flat. There is a lane – a 'kutcha' road on the back side beyond some 60 feet, visible due to non construction of houses in some vacant plots. I often wonder how long these plots remain vacant due to probable disputes of ownership or lack of finance. But being vacant they gave some advantage to me. Lot of grass and weird plants and trees have grown there which offer some greenery and fresh air and occasional sight of a few sparrows and mynas. Apart from that they give me a view of the small road sparced by lower middle class houses and roofs which may be nick-named as match boxes. The sharing of water and washing stone at the road-side Boring pump, house-wives chatting after the daily chores, auto rickshaws and small size goods- carriers helping people for make-shift arrangements etc provide some glimpse of outside life. Luckily it is not a low-lying area, else we could witness water logging and flotillas during heavy rains of Bangalore which had become famously infamous in recent times. The next best thing is the hawkers visiting the place with their small carts of merchandise. They seem to follow a strict time-table.. like news paper boys at 7 AM, tiffins like idli and dosa by 7.30, vegetables by 8, Flowers between 8 and 8.30, old paper collectors by 9, plastic items by 10.30 and tender coconut sellers by 11 AM etc. etc. This kind of their selling with different sounds of bell or yell that too in unknown languages gives some entertainment and time pass. And these hawkers need to make a return trip of selling in the lane as there is a dead-end of the road due to the construction of other Apartments nearby.
Back to bed after news paper/TV, I skim through the internet and the YouTube on my iPad for a variety of my interests, within the available time between powercuts and Wifi connectivity. YouTube catches my fascination because of so many generous enthusiasts sharing their valuable recordings of events. This helps me in listening to my favourite old songs, classicals and pictures of the past.
But today it was different. As soon as I was settling on the bed with my ipad, there was the lilting music of 'Sannayi' {Sannayi and Shehnayi are equivalents of musical instruments in the southern and northern India respectively for playing in temples and auspicious occasions like marriages} renting the air on the balcony side. And it was my favourite raga Abheri being played. The music grew louder and I get up and go to the balcony with my stick. And Lo! there is that young man blowing music into the Sannayi and followed by a decorated bull. Eversince Karaikuruchi Arunachalam played on the Sannai for Gemini Ganeshan's role in “Konjum Salangai” {“Muripinche Muvvalu” in Telugu} and accompanying S Janaki with her superb rendering of “Singara velane” in Tamil or “Nee leela paadeda Deva..” in Telugu - an everlasting melody - it has become a boon to the Sannai players who invariably play this song on all auspicious occasions and Abheri raga has become specially favourite with them. This boy however was playing the raga Abheri proper and not the film song, and to all its melodious nuances. Being my favourite raga too I listened with rapt attention. The bull was nodding his head in appreciation and rhythmically following him. The bull was decorated with colourful blankets and garlands of beads. A bunch of boys from the nearby slum and two or three stray dogs from the street were also following out of curiosity. The sight reminded me of the story of the Bagpiper – albeit with a difference.
The Sannai players accompanied by decorated bulls known as 'Gangireddu melam' is a common sight in villages of Andhra and other soutern states at the time of Makar Sankranti (Pongal). The households respectfully offer food grains, money and clothes to the Sannai players as well as the bull. The bull represents Basavanna, the vehicle of Lord Shiva. However coming so early in the month of October – around Dussehra and Diwali – was somewhat a rare sight for me. May be in Karnataka this is the time for their appearance. That boy may not be having any formal training into classical music but I was impressed by the Abheri raga played by him. It gave a freshness to environment just like a rural backdrop.
I had been listening to my favourite Abheri raga sung or played by various musicians of yore on the YouTube over the last few days.. right from “Eppadi paadinaro..” of Suddhananda Bharati sung by D K Pattammal in her prime youth times (may be 1940's) through saint Thyagaraja's “Nagumomu..” the evergreen renderings by BalaMurali krishna as well as Jesudas, Mysore Vasudevachar's “Bhajare manasa..” (credit:Ananya Ashok) upto Maharaja Swati Tirunal's famous Tillana rendered at Swati Sangeetotsavam (credit: O S Arun) and Mandolin renderings by U Srinivas. There have been interesting debates on the internet as to the similarities and differences between Karnataka Deva Gandhari and Abheri; Bhim palas and Dhanashree ragas, Dikshitar school and Thyagaraja's school of rendering etc., without much conclusion. That shabbily dressed boy playing Sannai however looks illiterate and blissfully unaware of all these musings. Who cares as long as he can play music? And for what reward?
I want to gift the boy with a Hundred rupee-note and some new cloths or blanket for decorating the bull..but alas my voice can't reach him across this much distance and although from the backside of my Flat it looks closer, it is much round about way covering not less than half a kilometer for him to come up to the gate of my Apartments.
I let loose a sigh for him as the sound of Sannai slowly fades into the return journey.!!
